"Hike, Camp and enjoy Nature at the Donald F. Miller Memorial Park & Campground"

Dear Friend of Western New York Youth:

The Nor-Ton Red Jacket Club has provided low-cost camping and outdoor recreational opportunities to Western New York area children and youth since it took over the former Girl Scout lease with New York State in 1986. We are an all-volunteer organization, with no paid staff. Our members raise all the costs of equipping, maintaining, and operating our facilities. We lease the 24.32 acres of Donald F. Miller Park from the New York State Canal Corporation.

We serve upwards of 5,000 area children each year in a variety of ways. In the last three years we have served hundreds of youth groups and other organizations, with groups coming from as far away as Rochester and Maryland to use our facilities. The Boys & Girls Club of the Northtowns usues our camp all summer for their summer day camp. Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Brownies, Girl Scouts, church and school groups, and social organizations from all over Western New York make use of the park.

In September 2001 we began a campaign to raise $250,000 to puchase the land in order to assure its long term future as a camp for youth and preserve it in its natural state. We established a Land Acquisition Task Force in March 2001, composed of both club members and community leaders. To date we have raised $46,000, including a $25,000 grant from the Margaret L. Wendt Foundation, $5,000 from the Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation, $3,200 from the 3M Foundation, $1,000 from the Kopczynski Family Foundation, $500 from Wal-Mart's Environmental Grants Program, $500 from Unifrax Corporation, $500 from Adelphia Communications, $300 from Keybank, $1,000 from the Third Warders Social Club, and $500 from the Holy Name Society fo St. Joseph's R.C. Church. Ten businessesin the Cities of Tonawanda and North Tonawanda and the Village of Kenmore are collecting donations from their customers for our project and numerous small donations have come in from area charitable organizations. businesses, and individuals.

In May of 2002 the Club's first attempt at a bowling event as a fundraiser proved to be a lot of fun for all involved. We received over $1,700 during the two day event at Tonawanda Bowling Center. More recently, this past August we even held a Miniature Golf Tournament at Parkside Gamezone which drew in a little more than $800 in one afternoon of pure fun. Both of these events are planned to become annual Red Jacket Club spectacles in the near future.

This web site will be used to help get our message across of how important Donald F. Miller Memorial Park is to the community, and we would greatly appreciate your help in reaching our goal of purchasing the land. We hope you will take the time to explore our little home on the web here, and maybe even become an avid visitor to our site. We have many big things in store for the area in the near future, and would love to include any available volunteers in our path ofsuccess.
